Everything begins with tuning. Tuning is a method to prepare the ear, the mind and the spirit for the music to come.

And so I invite you to settle in for the duration of the album with a pair of quality headphones or other audio monitors. But, in any event, with any medium you are most attuned to.

March 19, 2020: Gavin Newsom announces a stay-at-home order. Californians are required to shelter in place and are not allowed to leave their homes other than for work or essential services. Essential business are allowed to remain open with restrictions on capacity and hours.

. . .

The streets of San Francisco are empty. The channel is now filled with new birds of many varieties. Pigeons, pelicans, herons, seagulls, hummingbirds, sparrows, crows and doves all reform communities and nests in the area. On warm days, the seagulls’ cries can be heard all across the channel.

. . .

In December 2019, an outbreak due to the novel coronavirus occurred in Wuhan. On January 26, 2020, the first case in California was confirmed. As of November 18, 2020, there have been 1,059,267 reported cases and 18,466 reported fatalities in California. In the United States, there have been over 11 million reported cases and over 250,000 fatalities.

. . .

At night, silhouettes of birds, sea lions, manta rays and other creatures wander about and dive in and out of the channel. The darkness below the waters is ever moving, ever shifting and blends into the surface ripples. In the distance, the lights of the COVID testing center illuminate beneath the Bay Bridge.

. . .

My hair grows long and I haven’t left my home in months. The carpet has indentations where my frame has sunken in. I close my eyes and listen to chirps and indistinct shimmers outside of my window. As I lie on the floor, I close my eyes and imagine sitting on the beach in Waiheke Island and listening to the tuis call to each other.

. . .

On boundaries between wakefulness and sleep, the night creatures visit me along with other mystical figures. The moon god shimmers through the window in his full glory and seems to pull ever closer. Soft white light surrounds and fills the room and his lips form various shapes, but I can’t make out the words.

. . .

In a labyrinth that seems to twist with no end, at the center, a a gathering. Indistinct figures, shapes, mimicry of shapes number in the tens of thousands. One can never be too sure. The figures phase in and out and wander down the road. A long road and the end of which appears to be a great abyss.

. . .

I open my eyes and I’m lying on a tarp. The moon is shining brightly above and the crickets chirp with lively activity all around. Raccoons scuttle back and forth, curious to see what they can snatch or scavenge. Up above, space seems to open to infinity. The Perseid meteor shower rains celestial bursts of illumination. My partner excitedly points at the sky and whisper-exclaims to me that she saw another shooting star.

The reel-to-reel winds to a halt. I drift back off as muted machines softly sing a serial lullaby.

. . .
